Description: Montana was originally a very expensive horse. He was bought at auction for $125,000 and went into training with internationally renowned trainer and Triple Crown winner Bob Baffert. However, right before he raced he developed a tendon problem, went into rehab, went back into rigorous training and yet again developed a tendon issue. Clearly, Montana is not cut out for racing and thus retired but certainly other disciplines could suit him very well. He’s a very personable and well-bred guy.

December 2016 Update:  Montana has been moved to Bear Creek Stables where he will begin his training as a trail horse.  Stay tuned for updates!!
February 2017 Update:  Montana is doing extremely well and has quickly become a barn favorite.  Nothing phases this guy.  He is full of energy and very athletic but reserved and calm when he needs to be.  He is an amusing character and enjoys watching all the goings on at Bear Creek.  Although the weather has been awful the few times he’s been taken out under saddle he’s performed like a champ.  He has a beautiful fluid gait and is very responsive. willing and according to the barn manager an absolute joy to ride.
July 2017 Update:  Montana is going well under saddle, both in the arena and on the nearby trails at Bear Creek Redwoods alongside his paddock buddy Runner. Montana has a nice, lofty trot with good transitions, and he is starting to reach for the bit and engage his hindquarters. We have been working on lots of circles and serpentines in the arena to develop his balance and flexibility.  A lot of racehorses come to us heavy on the forehand or leaning on the bit for balance, but Montana is very light, and goes happily in a comfort snaffle.  He is quite the head turner with his glossy, copper coat.  Montana has great ground manners, standing quietly for grooming, tacking up and the farrier.  He is quite the character, with very expressive eyes and lips – always the first to try any new treats brought by visitors – and then very quickly lets you know if it is to his liking!
