Materazzi (Click here for Past Performances)

ADOPTION IS PENDING!!!!!

"Materazzi" or Macho, as we are calling him is a gorgeous giant 17.1 hh 4 year old dark gray gelding by Tannersmyman (Lord Carson). Macho had only six starts in which he won one race and showed in another.

Macho comes to us straight off the track from Golden Gate Fields with bone chips in both knees. We are evaluating whether or not this will require surgery or if a long rest will suffice since Macho will not go back into racing. At any rate, we are in the process of evaluating his condition and will update on his webpage.

At present Macho is settling in quite nicely at the Geibel's farm in Clayton, CA. Our resident good will ambassador, Ymustichasethecat (Cat) is shown greeting Macho on his first "turnout" in the round pen. Other photos show Macho in the mare motel, which he prefers over a stall since he can see all the goings on and with Craig. Craig reports that Macho enjoys both equine and human company. When cleaning his stall, Macho prefers to stand very close and gently nuzzle. It will take sometime for Macho to come down from his track life and to recover, but we see a really nice prospect here as a riding horse in future.

The rescue of Macho was made possible by an extremely generous donation by the Ventura family; Anthony, Dante, Melanie and Tony. Thank you for your compassion and belief in us!

Update: April 2010

Macho is scheduled for surgery at the Golden Gate Fields equine hospital on April 28, 2010. He will have bone chips removed in both knees. He is showing quite a bit of discomfort and without the removal of these chips will be crippled. Dr. Kim Kuhlmann of SF Equine and the chief medical veterinarian at Golden Gate Fields will be performing the surgery on-site at the track. Dr. Kuhlmann says in part: "I am sure both knees have chips and concurrent cartilage loss and degenerative joint disease." With this surgery to remove the chips and scrape the bone, rest and rehab Macho can completely recover and go on to a new career and live pain free as he should. These sorts of injuries are common in horses that have been run too hard and too early. Please help if you can by donating to his care. All sponsors will be listed on his page unless otherwise instructed.

Update: May 2010

Macho is back from surgery and feeling no pain. He walked off the trailer as though nothing had happened and gladly ate his dinner. We took the bandages off after a week as there was no swelling and no drainage. The hardest part of the entire episode will be keeping Macho in the Mare Motel until about mid June as he is already striving to go out in pasture with his friends and is constantly crying and begging to join them. The last two photos show his still bandaged legs and his sweet face looking out.

We would like to acknowledge Ms. Allison Hazelton for helping to sponsor Macho!
