Calm Agnes enjoying her new digs

The newly renamed "Maggie" with Janette enjoying a lovely Memorial Day 2008 morning.

Calm Agnes was born in 2005 and is a filly by Decarchy standing at Magali Farms from his first crop and is out of the mare Calm Seas. Agnes didn't show much interest in racing and was retired before her first start. She is a sweetheart and loves attention, particularly treats such as carrots. She is a big girl with a big heart and very gentle and sweet. Former owner racing partners Jeff & Janette Deeney adopted her straight from the track to be retrained as a riding horse for Janette.

Update: January 2008

"Today was the big day for Calm Agnes. Hoofbeats picked her up in Morgan Hill at about noon today and she made her way up to Page Mill Pastures. She arrived wide-eyed and spunky.

We walked her a bit to try to get her settled down and then walked her into the pasture. She quickly made friends (and asserted herself when necessary). She had a good time running around and kicking up her heels. To quote Jeff, "Where was this at the track?"

I think she will be very happy there and I can't wait to start working with her."

Update: February 2008

"I've met some great people at the Pastures...all of them think that Calm Agnes is beautiful! One woman commented this morning about seeing her "running through the hills last night in the moonlight.

I went to the pasture this morning and was afraid that I wouldn't be able to find her in all of the fog. I realized quickly that at 17hh, she really does stand out, even in the fog, caked in mud! I went into the pasture and she came to me right away. She was good about letting me get her halter on and leading her out. Although while I was leading her out she discovered the carrots in my back pocket!

We spent about half an hour grooming and then took a little walk. She was still checking everything out but wasn't nearly as spooked as she was yesterday.

Jeff and I went back this evening and found her eating with the mares (caked in mud again). She's doing well integrating herself into the herd. We stealthily gave her a few carrots and she then followed us out to the gate. She's back to the sweetie we remember. We'll see how she does tomorrow getting her shoes off!"

Update: August 2009

Over a year and a half later Maggie has developed into a fine riding horse and companion for Janette.
