Dark Nose (Click here for Past Performances)
Dark Nose (Brownie) is a six year old gelding that earned 112K at the track over only 10 races at Hollywood Park and
Santa Anita. Dark Nose is by Betrando, one of California's leading sires and started his career in maiden weight specials
racing against the likes of Kentucky Derby contender Brother Derek and gaining the services of leading jockey Garrett Gomez.
Since his short lived career Dark Nose has really fallen on hard and bitter times. He is currently lame on three feet, has locking knee syndrome, an old bow and a potential
stifle issue. He only moves when he has to and is very uncomfortable. The attending vet has recommended a
number of treatments and scans which this rescue cannot afford. Our only option at this time is to bute him
and leave him in peace and hope for the best and that time will be a great healer as it often is in off track
horses. He is a gentle and grateful creature
and has the will to live.
We have no idea what his long term prognosis might be. We would love to place him into a
loving home where he can be turned out in a field for a year or so to recover and then reassess his condition. We hope someone
compassionate will step up and help us out.
Update - June 13, 2009
Brownie is doing better and does not always need bute on a daily basis now. His appetite is
better and some of the light has returned to his eyes. We will be taking new photographs on June 30th and
posting them as I am meeting a kind-hearted supporter named Erika H. who has
taken an interest in him and would like to, if at all possible, move him to Visalia, CA into a pasture
a neighbor of hers has. She has no aspirations to ride him ever. We would also like to thank a small
group of Alex Brown's Friends of Barbaro (FOBS) and bloggers from the Chronicle of the Horse who have now contributed
to Brownie's care. We have raised enough funds to support him for two months and are
extremely grateful for everyone who has sent donations and good wishes. We will keep his progress
updated on this site and will create an email group of his supporters that we will
personally update.
